1st of August

So yesterday was Swiss National Day! And if you're wondering why am I celebrating? Its because I'm half Swiss. This day usually consists of parties, lots of yummy food (unfortunately no paper lanterns!) and some fireworks at the end. If none of you know, Swiss National Day is a celebration of the foundation of the Swiss Confederacy.

For dinner we decided to have Raclette. Raclette for those of you who haven't had it before (you're totally missing out!) is where you melt cheese either over an open fire (which they do in the alps) or with a Raclette machine as seen below and is then poured or scraped out of its little pan onto your plate. It’s typically enjoyed with potatoes and sides such as gherkins, baby onions and salad. Of course everyone eats their Raclette differently so there are various other side dishes you can have with it. Personally I love the cheese with a ripe pear. It’s sweet but savoury, slightly crunchy and cheesy and warm; just scrumptious!

The Raclette we had was slightly different as there is a grill on top where you can grill pretty much everything and anything you like. We had some meat to go along with the cheese and mmmm it was really good. Kind of like a mini BBQ but with lots and lots of cheese. And to top it all off a nice (or few) glasses of chilled white wine XD.

We did have some fireworks but unfortunately I failed and failed hard and couldn't get any pictures! Perhaps next time though XD. Did anyone else celebrate the 1st?

xx
