Tokyo Day 7 2016 Edit
Hey guys, today was such a slow and lazy start! The Onsen seriously did its job in relaxing the hell out of us. We decided that today we would take a trip to two of Tokyo's biggest temples/shrines. I love visiting these places as they always feel so spiritual and calming. We headed first to Harajuku and Meiji Jingu and unfortunately the weather today was not great. It was spitting pretty much the whole day but still hot AF! The walk up to the shrine is pretty cool too as you are in the forest and can hear the cicadas chirping constantly (only in the summer though!). On the way there is also a garden you can visit for the price of 500yen.
You must cleanse yourself before entering the shrine which means rinsing your hands and mouth. The way to do it is with one of the many ladles which you fill with water. First you rinse the left hand then the right and then take some water into your mouth and spit it out. With the remaining water in the ladle you rinse off the handle. It is something that you do at most shrines/temples in Japan so it's always handy to know what to do. If you do not know then just follow what everyone else does and you'll be ok.
The shrine unfortunately was under construction this year so we couldn't see all of it but it was still beautiful. Meiji Jingu is always a lot quieter than Senso-Ji and you can definitely feel it. It feels a lot quieter and calming being here. And if your lucky you will get to witness prayer time. Which is something magical in itself.
So after Meiji Jingu we headed to Senso-Ji. There is a big shopping street, Nakamise Dori leading down to the temple which is always packed full of people. You can purchase souvenirs and food here at very reasonable prices. The street food here is awesome so definitely give it a try.
(And definitely come and get some of these age mangu because they are seriously heavenly! And the staff are really nice and speak English so that's always good!)
This temple is the oldest in Tokyo and it is truly beautiful to see. And definitely try and come down here at night time because wow! It is even more beautiful than in the day. Again the temple was under construction so we could not see the 5 storey Pagoda :(. When you see all of it, it truly is amazing. And make sure you come before 5pm as most of the shops and the temple itself close then.
After a long day we decided to get dinner at Ichiran Ramen. This is a very famous chain ramen shop in Japan and they have many branches across Tokyo. And seriously, this ramen is soooo good! I like the fact that you can basically customize your Tonkotsu (pork bone) ramen. By that I mean you can choose how much garlic and spice and onions and oil you want in your ramen as well as what strength of broth you want and even what firmness of noodles you'd like. It's a little quirky and it might take you some time to figure out the right mix of ingredients to get your perfect ramen bowl but once you do figure it out, it is so damn worth it!!! xD
Till next time xx
